Ragweed Season!

Does anyone else out there have a Ragweed allergy like I do? Ragweed isImage result for ragweed images my worst allergy! I have had asthma most of my life. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 5 years old after my parents bought an Irish Setter puppy and brought him home. I loved that dog from the start, but my body didn’t! I began to get sick a lot with nasal congestion, sneezing, my eyes would get itchy, red and puffy, and I began to have a hard time breathing, had bronchitis often, Etc. After, my parents brought me to, I am sure, many doctor appointments to figure out what was going on with me, I was sent to an allergist and finally diagnosed. It was then, after that horrible scratch test they do on your back to find out what you are allergic to, that it was determined that I was not only allergic to dogs, but to just about everything with fur and four feet as well as everything green outside! I had allergies to everything! Except for food. Thank the Lord for that! Over the past 40+ years that I have had asthma and struggled with allergies, I have been under the care of an allergist. As I have gotten older, my allergies seem to have subsided a bit. The allergens that I used to react horribly to, I either no longer react to, or I have a mild allergic reaction to. Except for Ragweed. That darn weed is the worst for me and can really make me feel miserable for several months! It starts to bloom in late July and peaks in mid August and stays until the first frost that kills it. Living in Minnesota…in the country, there is a lot of Ragweed around! Once Fall season comes and I enjoy the beautiful colors of the season (Fall is my favorite season so I don’t want to rush it), by early November when the leaves have fallen from the trees and it begins to look dull and gray and brown everywhere, I begin to pray for the temperatures to drop and to get our first frost so that the Ragweed will die! Sometimes we do receive that first frost in October here in Minnesota and then the Ragweed dies and my suffering ends but that is not always the case. In Minnesota, you never know exactly what the weather will be like and how long or short any of the four seasons will be! When we have warmer temperatures through October and into November, I begin to complain! My friends and family think that I am crazy for complaining about Minnesota having warm weather but it is because I want the Ragweed to die off and it can’t in those wonderful warm Fall temperatures! I am sure that I am one of the few people who look forward to 32 degree mornings in October! But…I have been suffering from an allergy for three months at that point and am just plain sick of it!

Since I have always had to take medication for my asthma, I have also tried looking into natural medicine and alternative ways to get and be healthy; natural supplements and healthy foods that I could be using to help with my health and lessen my allergies and boost my immune system so that I can be healthier. I have been seeing a Naturopath for about 12 years and she has been hugely instrumental in helping me become more healthy. I have learned, through her as well as my own research, that our gut is largely responsible for our health and the strength of our immune system. My Naturopath worked hard on getting my gut healthy through supplements and a plethora of homeopathic remedies. In my searching and quest for health, I was introduced to the healing properties of Essential oils. I used a few oils here and there from a couple of different companies but not fully devoted myself to the use of Essential Oils for my health. That is, until recently. Over a year and a half ago, I joined in with an essential oil company that prides themselves on having Certified, Pure, Therapeutic Grade Oils (CPTG) and Essential oil infused supplements. I learned the importance of using pure essential oils and how potent they are and how many ways they help you. I believe that God created everything on this earth and that much of it was created for our benefit so knowing how these oils are sourced and what their therapeutic properties are totally fed my quest for natural and alternative medicine. I fell in love with their Essential oils and shortly afterwards began to use their supplements too. They have many supplements that help with your gut health and are very good about educating about gut health and how important it is in getting, and staying, healthy. I have been using those supplements, namely the probiotic, the detoxifying supplements, the digestive supplements and the enzymes for your gut. They have helped me, I believe, become a much healthier person and I truly believe that is why my allergens have begun to get better. I also use a seasonal supplement they have called TriEase, daily, which has the Essential oils of Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint in a little softgel. Thes three oils are very helpful for seasonal discomfort. I am so happy to say that this year, for the first year in my life, I am not suffering from the Ragweed like I always have. The symptoms have greatly subsided and it is wonderful! Sure, I have my days that if I spend a lot of time outside that I will get itchy eyes and may feel a little difficulty breathing. I still take a prescription inhaler on a daily basis called QVar and I still take my Zyrtec on a daily basis too. But in the past, those two were never enough to get me through the long, drawn out Ragweed season and I would inevitably end up at the doctors office getting an antibiotic for a sinus infection before the season is over. Not this year so far! The TriEase has been an excellent addition to my antihistamine that I take. I also will lean on the Essential oil called Breathe that helps me when I begin to feel a little tight in the chest and have a slight wheeze. I take that Breathe oil and put a drop of it in the palm of my hand, rub my hands together and inhale it deeply into my lungs through both my nose and my mouth. I am telling you, that opens my airways up better than a rescue inhaler would! The TriEase softgels and the Breathe Essential oil have been an amazing addition to my asthma and allergy regimen and I will never go without them now! Maybe you suffer like I do during Ragweed season, or maybe it’s in the Spring that you suffer more when the pollen comes out (I suffer at those times too) and could benefit from using this supplement and Essential oil too! If so, give me a shout.

Now I can enjoy the rest of the Summer and Fall breathing easier! Maybe if our temperatures stay on the warmer side during the Fall months I won’t be so eager for the colder temperatures to come because I won’t be suffering so much! Bring it on! 🙂

Paleo Diet Here I Come!

Well, I have decided. I am going to do it. I am going to make a drastic change in my diet and try the Paleo diet. The Paleo diet, from what I have learned, is going back to the way of eating that has no dairy, no grains, no sugars, no processed food. I don’t have any food allergies at all and am only mildly sensitive to dairy when I have too much of it or it is very rich dairy. So these aren’t the reasons why I want to switch to the diet, or way of eating (I don’t like thinking or saying that I am on a “diet”). I am just sick of not feeling my best. I am sick of my weight always being a minimum of 15 pounds overweight (or more sometimes!) and I have the hardest time losing it! I am sick of having aches and pains and I know that inflammation has a lot to do with that and I know that your diet can have something to do with that. I am sick of not being able to sleep well and having low energy most of the time. So, I have been doing my research and have decided that this is the way of eating that I want to try…maybe for just a few months, or maybe for longer. We will see how it goes. I am excited too because my husband has decided to jump on the band wagon with me and eat the same way! That will make cooking these types of meals much easier! My 1o year old twins will have to adjust to these meals! I won’t be making two different meals, that’s for sure! Who knows, maybe it will be good for them to eat this way too with both of them having ADHD/ADD and my daughter being a bit overweight. Being kids though, I know they like their desserts so I have already bought the Paleo desserts cookbook! I like my desserts too, believe me, so if I can make some yummy but healthy desserts for my family to help them feel like we all are not being deprived, that would be a win!

I will keep you posted with my progress. I haven’t started it yet. I have been gathering recipes so that I know how to begin with some yummy food that my family will like. I plan to start with a 21 day recipe program that I found online through PaleoHacks. They have been my main resource so far. I am also waiting on my Paleo Eats cookbook to arrive. Wish me luck!
