Ragweed Season!

Does anyone else out there have a Ragweed allergy like I do? Ragweed isImage result for ragweed images my worst allergy! I have had asthma most of my life. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 5 years old after my parents bought an Irish Setter puppy and brought him home. I loved that dog from the start, but my body didn’t! I began to get sick a lot with nasal congestion, sneezing, my eyes would get itchy, red and puffy, and I began to have a hard time breathing, had bronchitis often, Etc. After, my parents brought me to, I am sure, many doctor appointments to figure out what was going on with me, I was sent to an allergist and finally diagnosed. It was then, after that horrible scratch test they do on your back to find out what you are allergic to, that it was determined that I was not only allergic to dogs, but to just about everything with fur and four feet as well as everything green outside! I had allergies to everything! Except for food. Thank the Lord for that! Over the past 40+ years that I have had asthma and struggled with allergies, I have been under the care of an allergist. As I have gotten older, my allergies seem to have subsided a bit. The allergens that I used to react horribly to, I either no longer react to, or I have a mild allergic reaction to. Except for Ragweed. That darn weed is the worst for me and can really make me feel miserable for several months! It starts to bloom in late July and peaks in mid August and stays until the first frost that kills it. Living in Minnesota…in the country, there is a lot of Ragweed around! Once Fall season comes and I enjoy the beautiful colors of the season (Fall is my favorite season so I don’t want to rush it), by early November when the leaves have fallen from the trees and it begins to look dull and gray and brown everywhere, I begin to pray for the temperatures to drop and to get our first frost so that the Ragweed will die! Sometimes we do receive that first frost in October here in Minnesota and then the Ragweed dies and my suffering ends but that is not always the case. In Minnesota, you never know exactly what the weather will be like and how long or short any of the four seasons will be! When we have warmer temperatures through October and into November, I begin to complain! My friends and family think that I am crazy for complaining about Minnesota having warm weather but it is because I want the Ragweed to die off and it can’t in those wonderful warm Fall temperatures! I am sure that I am one of the few people who look forward to 32 degree mornings in October! But…I have been suffering from an allergy for three months at that point and am just plain sick of it!

Since I have always had to take medication for my asthma, I have also tried looking into natural medicine and alternative ways to get and be healthy; natural supplements and healthy foods that I could be using to help with my health and lessen my allergies and boost my immune system so that I can be healthier. I have been seeing a Naturopath for about 12 years and she has been hugely instrumental in helping me become more healthy. I have learned, through her as well as my own research, that our gut is largely responsible for our health and the strength of our immune system. My Naturopath worked hard on getting my gut healthy through supplements and a plethora of homeopathic remedies. In my searching and quest for health, I was introduced to the healing properties of Essential oils. I used a few oils here and there from a couple of different companies but not fully devoted myself to the use of Essential Oils for my health. That is, until recently. Over a year and a half ago, I joined in with an essential oil company that prides themselves on having Certified, Pure, Therapeutic Grade Oils (CPTG) and Essential oil infused supplements. I learned the importance of using pure essential oils and how potent they are and how many ways they help you. I believe that God created everything on this earth and that much of it was created for our benefit so knowing how these oils are sourced and what their therapeutic properties are totally fed my quest for natural and alternative medicine. I fell in love with their Essential oils and shortly afterwards began to use their supplements too. They have many supplements that help with your gut health and are very good about educating about gut health and how important it is in getting, and staying, healthy. I have been using those supplements, namely the probiotic, the detoxifying supplements, the digestive supplements and the enzymes for your gut. They have helped me, I believe, become a much healthier person and I truly believe that is why my allergens have begun to get better. I also use a seasonal supplement they have called TriEase, daily, which has the Essential oils of Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint in a little softgel. Thes three oils are very helpful for seasonal discomfort. I am so happy to say that this year, for the first year in my life, I am not suffering from the Ragweed like I always have. The symptoms have greatly subsided and it is wonderful! Sure, I have my days that if I spend a lot of time outside that I will get itchy eyes and may feel a little difficulty breathing. I still take a prescription inhaler on a daily basis called QVar and I still take my Zyrtec on a daily basis too. But in the past, those two were never enough to get me through the long, drawn out Ragweed season and I would inevitably end up at the doctors office getting an antibiotic for a sinus infection before the season is over. Not this year so far! The TriEase has been an excellent addition to my antihistamine that I take. I also will lean on the Essential oil called Breathe that helps me when I begin to feel a little tight in the chest and have a slight wheeze. I take that Breathe oil and put a drop of it in the palm of my hand, rub my hands together and inhale it deeply into my lungs through both my nose and my mouth. I am telling you, that opens my airways up better than a rescue inhaler would! The TriEase softgels and the Breathe Essential oil have been an amazing addition to my asthma and allergy regimen and I will never go without them now! Maybe you suffer like I do during Ragweed season, or maybe it’s in the Spring that you suffer more when the pollen comes out (I suffer at those times too) and could benefit from using this supplement and Essential oil too! If so, give me a shout.

Now I can enjoy the rest of the Summer and Fall breathing easier! Maybe if our temperatures stay on the warmer side during the Fall months I won’t be so eager for the colder temperatures to come because I won’t be suffering so much! Bring it on! 🙂

Paleo Diet Here I Come!

Well, I have decided. I am going to do it. I am going to make a drastic change in my diet and try the Paleo diet. The Paleo diet, from what I have learned, is going back to the way of eating that has no dairy, no grains, no sugars, no processed food. I don’t have any food allergies at all and am only mildly sensitive to dairy when I have too much of it or it is very rich dairy. So these aren’t the reasons why I want to switch to the diet, or way of eating (I don’t like thinking or saying that I am on a “diet”). I am just sick of not feeling my best. I am sick of my weight always being a minimum of 15 pounds overweight (or more sometimes!) and I have the hardest time losing it! I am sick of having aches and pains and I know that inflammation has a lot to do with that and I know that your diet can have something to do with that. I am sick of not being able to sleep well and having low energy most of the time. So, I have been doing my research and have decided that this is the way of eating that I want to try…maybe for just a few months, or maybe for longer. We will see how it goes. I am excited too because my husband has decided to jump on the band wagon with me and eat the same way! That will make cooking these types of meals much easier! My 1o year old twins will have to adjust to these meals! I won’t be making two different meals, that’s for sure! Who knows, maybe it will be good for them to eat this way too with both of them having ADHD/ADD and my daughter being a bit overweight. Being kids though, I know they like their desserts so I have already bought the Paleo desserts cookbook! I like my desserts too, believe me, so if I can make some yummy but healthy desserts for my family to help them feel like we all are not being deprived, that would be a win!

I will keep you posted with my progress. I haven’t started it yet. I have been gathering recipes so that I know how to begin with some yummy food that my family will like. I plan to start with a 21 day recipe program that I found online through PaleoHacks. They have been my main resource so far. I am also waiting on my Paleo Eats cookbook to arrive. Wish me luck!

It’s Spring Time!

No matter where you live, Spring is finally upon us. I live in Minnesota and it is finally becoming green! Right now the trees have small leaves on them, having just budded about two-three weeks ago. I love the color of new leaves! They are such a pretty, light yellowish-green color. The grass is nice and green now and the fields are filled with yellow sprinkled all across them. It is lovely! Slowly the flowers are blooming filling yards and roadsides with bursts of color! Spring is one of my favorite seasons!
Unfortunately though, with the beautiful budding of everything living comes the pollen. Allergens begin to fill the air! This causes, for many people, including me, symptoms like a runny, itchy nose, watery and red eyes, maybe some coughing to go along with it! This can make this beautiful season filled with new life, become a miserable time of year to hang outside when the weather is so warm and inviting! I have suffered from allergies all of my life. I am one of those blessed people who are allergic to just about everything that God created! Whether that be on land or on furry feet! I have always taken medication for my allergies. I was diagnosed with Asthma when I was 5 years old.
Even though I have had to take medication for the majority of my life, I have sought out more natural remedies over the past few years. I have seen a Naturopath who has helped me rid my gut of toxins over the past decade to help my body become more healthy and stronger, more able to fight for itself.
One thing that I have learned over the past few years is how important it is to cleanse your gut! Toxins hang out in your gut. Did you know that? Our guts are also called our second brain. Your second brain communicates with your first brain! When your gut is filled with toxins, so will your body be as well! Doing a good healthy cleanse every three months helps to rid your body of those toxins to help your organs function better and healthier. Then be sure to follow up a cleanse with good, high quality Pre and Probiotics. Everyone should be taking Probiotics, including children! I give my 10 year old twins Probiotics every day! A good liver cleanse is good for allergies too. I use a great supplement to help cleanse my liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin called Zendocrine.
I have learned in the past couple of years that there are also some essential oils that are very beneficial for helping us deal with those nasty seasonal threats and annoyances! These are Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint. I use these oils every day. I put them in a capsule and ingest them. I am very careful of the essential oils I ingest though and I encourage you to be also! You NEVER want to ingest an oil that does not have Supplemental Facts on the label stating that it is safe to ingest. You always want to be sure you are using a high quality, pure, therapeutic grade essential oil! I also use Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint on my feet, specifically around my toes because in reflexology that is where your eyes and nose and sinuses are located. You can also make a tea with them! I love the flavor of these oils added to some hot water, maybe even mixed with a Lemon Tea bag.
Be sure to do your homework when you chose to use essential oils as a natural remedy. I have received definite relief by using these three oils during this beautiful Spring season. Often times, I have to use them through the Summer and Fall too due to the number of things I am allergic to. Hopefully you can find some relief too! If you would like more information on the essential oil company that I use, please feel free to contact me directly.

Just Breathe!

Have you ever had just one of those mornings where it is so frustrating, either with your own schedule, being late, dealing with traffic, or with your children and their morning, getting them up and going to school? This morning was one of those mornings for me! My husband had somewhere to be pretty early so he wasn’t able to get up and help out with getting our twins up, ready for school and out of the house. It is always hairy around our house in the morning with the twins. My son has ADHD, and mornings are when he is the most raw with his symptoms. I like to say that he is my son, in the most purest form! He is highly impulsive, and very hyperactive. He is highly distractible and can’t keep his mind on anything that needs to be done for longer than a few minutes. You think I am exaggerating? I am not. Breakfast is a huge production. First he can’t decide what he wants to eat…in the meantime while I am trying to get that information from him he is falling on the floor from the stool, grabbing anything that may be on the counter and playing with it or throwing it around, making verbal noises, etc. When he finally decides what he wants to eat (or I finally just make something for him), he will sit down on the stool at our counter to eat. But not for long. After maybe two bites, he is getting up off the stool, or falling off it. He is making noise, or touching something near him. Breakfast takes at least two to three times longer to complete with him because he just can’t make himself stay on task and we are constantly telling him to eat, sit down, stop touching that, etc. It is exhausting. Then I have my daughter. My little girl has a processing deficiency right now. Soon we will be bringing her to a place called Learning RX to address this issue and retrain her brain (this will be in another post). She also has a long-term and short-term memory deficiency so things with her on a daily basis are not easy. Everything with her is  v e r y  s l o w. Getting her going in the morning takes one of us standing near her keeping her going. Otherwise, just getting dressed will take anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Once she’s at the table for breakfast, she is fine! She eats at a normal pace, thankfully! But then its back to following her around the house making sure she is making her bed in a timely fashion, brushing her teeth and hair and getting upstairs in a reasonable time. If left to her own speed, these three tasks, if she remembers to do them all, will take anywhere from 10-20 minutes as well! Then we move on to getting her boots and coat on. I am telling you, I don’t stop for one minute to do anything for myself once these two get up on a school day until they are out the door walking to the bus! Today was a tough morning. It is at these times when I need to just breathe. I need to take about 5 deep breathes and calm myself down. I love my essential oils for this. I will take my Wild Orange and put a drop in the palm of my hand and cup it around my nose and take a deep breath! I will do this three times and by the third one, I am feeling more at ease. I am so thankful for my essential oils! Without them, I feel I don’t know how I would get through my days sometimes!!

DIY Cough Syrup

My family has been one of the lucky ones to get the crud that has been going around lately. My ten year old daughter started with it back in early December. She didn’t have too much of a cold, the majority of the symptoms seemed so go away fairly quickly…except the cough! The nagging cough that kept her up at night and that dragged on during the day. I am more of a natural remedies person and will look for alternative ways to “cure the common cold”.  I don’t like using over the counter drugs, if I can help it, especially cough syrup. I don’t think they work anyway so I started searching for recipes to help my daughter with her cough, especially at night so that she (and the rest of us) could sleep! I found this recipe with essential oils and honey.

If you are not privy on essential oils, here is a tip. There are many, many different companies out there making essential oils, however, they are not all created equal! Be sure you are checking your sources and read up on them. Because essential oils can be used on our bodies, topically, in the air we breathe, aromatically, and in our bodies, by ingestion, you will want your oils pure! You will want to be sure they are free of any contaminates, pesticides, and any additives. You will also want to be sure you are using a therapeutic grade oil, this is an essential oil that aids in providing potent therapeutic benefits. Many of the essential oils out there will claim to be therapeutic grade. However, when you attach “pure” to the label, this oil becomes an oil that is 100% pure therapeutic grade oil that has been tested rigorously and that has high standards of quality control. Through the process of testing and quality control, the essential oils become certified due to the rigorous testing and quality control. This is the essential oil that you should look for: CPTG, which stands for Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. I know for me, I want to use the best, purist, most potent and therapeutic grade essential oils for myself and for my family. I also want to be sure I am buying from a reputable company who harvests their oils from indigenous plants, and the countries that they thrive in.

Back to the cough syrup…I mixed up Frankincense, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Wild Orange, Clove and Cinnamon with a 1/2 cup of honey. I gave my daughter 1 teaspoon of the cough syrup mixture two times per day, once in the morning and once before she went to bed. The first night I gave it to her before bedtime there was a remarkable decrease in her cough! She was able to sleep (as well as this tired Mom) for the whole night with just a few coughs here and there. I continued giving her cough syrup twice a day and by the third day, she hardly coughed at all, during the day or at night! It worked! And it worked very well! So, when the rest of us started getting this wonderful virus that she brought into our home, I was making this cough syrup by the cupful! My husband was the most recent unfortunate victim to get the virus. Let me tell you, after waking up about every 5-10 minutes because my husband kept coughing right next to me, practically in my ear, I wasn’t too excited to sleep next to him that night! So I got up and mixed up some cough syrup for him and had him take it (I think it was around 1:15am). It worked almost immediately! I was so happy (and so was he)! We both were finally able to sleep peacefully for the rest of the night.

There are alternatives to over the counter drugs that sometimes have worse side effects than benefits. This alternative I am happy to share!

Hello World!

I am new to this whole blogging thing! So new that I am not really sure what I am doing but I am muddling my way through, hoping that at least one person will read my blog. If I get one person, then my efforts will have been successful!

A little about me: I am a wife, mother to 6 children, and grandmother to one granddaughter (so far!). My husband and I have been married for 19 years (on Feb 7th!). My husband and I blended a family together when we decided to get married. We both walked into the marriage with two sons from previous marriages who were all between the ages of 2-8 years old. Blending a family is not easy, we had many struggles, joys, triumphs, and successes. All of our sons are now wonderful adults. Two of the four sons are married and, like I said above, I have one beautiful and fun little granddaughter who is 3 months old. My husband and I adopted girl/boy twins when our older four sons were all in high school or college; the twins were 3 years old when they came to live with us. That presented a whole new chapter in our lives, and opened up a whole new avenue of challenges. My husband and I are believers and have had to lean on our faith in Jesus to, some of the days, just get us through each day. Thankfully, our God is faithful and has definitely walked with us on this journey.

I started down the path of living naturally with essential oils about a twelve years ago, using different essential oil companies than what I use now. I like the idea of using what comes from the earth. I believe that God created everything under the sun and that he created them with medicinal and therapeutic properties that benefit us. My two stepsons both had different forms of ADHD and depression and were on medication for it. I began looking into essential oils to see if they could help my sons with their attention and focus issues and to help emotionally balance them, as well as help enhance our immune systems to help our family be healthy.  I had some success here and there until I found the essential oil company I use now.  I was introduced to doTERRA over a year ago and I fell in love with the company. I love their mission of sharing life-enhancing benefits of therapeutic grade essential oils with the world by discovering and developing the world’s highest quality essential oil products. They produce their essential oil products to the highest standard of quality, purity, and safety used in the industry-CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. This is why I have chosen this company for me personally, and for my family. I use these essential oils and their essential oil infused supplements every day! I put them on my children’s feet, neck and body, my grandbaby’s feet, my feet, and anyone else’s feet that I can get! I ingest the oils daily either in my water or in capsules and I do all of this to enhance our health and quality of life! My husband and children ingest these oils too! This is how safe they are! I love that I can give them to my 10 year olds! I love to share what I have learned. I love to share what has worked well for me or my family and friends and I love to share success stories! This is what I will be doing in this blog, so come along on this journey with me! I would love to have you!
